8 Reasons to Love HubSpot’s Social Media Tool

One of the first concerns when embarking on a social media marketing campaign is finding the time to do it well. So many platforms, so much content, so little time, so few resources. It’s true—if you spend time on each social media platform every day, hopping from Facebook to Twitter to LinkedIn, it can take up a good chunk of your day.

The challenge with these platforms is that they focus solely on social media, and you might also be utilizing e-mail marketing, a blog, advanced content downloads and a contacts database. Wouldn’t it be great if all of these could be integrated under one software umbrella? With HubSpot’s recently released Social Media Tool, they can. Here are 8 reasons I love HubSpot’s social media tool:

  • Integration – HubSpot’s software now allows you to manage your contacts database, e-mail marketing, blog, lead generation and nurturing, and social media marketing, all from one dashboard.  Monitor conversations in social spaces to uncover topics that are important to your target audience, then write a blog post about it or send an e-mail.
  • Measuring the Impact – This has always been challenging with social media. We know engaging with target audiences, extending our reach and creating sharable content is incredibly valuable, but it’s hard to put a number on that, which is often what upper-management asks of us. Now in HubSpot, you can not only evaluate all of your social channels at-a-glance to determine where to best allocate your resources, you can determine how many leads and even customers came from those social channels.

  • Efficiency through Scheduled and Automated Posts – This is where you can save time. All through one portal and with just a few clicks, you can schedule content to post to your Facebook page, Twitter feed and a LinkedIn Group at a designated future date and time. HubSpot even suggests the best time of day to post to help you reach the greatest number of people and get the most interaction. You can follow HubSpot’s suggestions or create a custom posting schedule based on your own research of  your social accounts.

  • Identify and Engage with Influencers – HubSpot provides you with insights on each and every post you make in social media. This data is available from each social platform, but we love having it all in one place. You can see who has liked, commented or shared your content and also see how many followers that person has, giving you an idea of your total potential reach, as well as identifying influencers you’ll want to continue to engage with. Put those influencers into a list and share content with them in an e-mail.

  • Monitor Existing Leads in Social Media – One thing lacking in social media marketing in the past was the ability to tie your social conversations to leads that already exist in your contacts database and track that engagement. You can now do this via HubSpot’s social media tool, which is an exciting new feature. This allows you to really see how social engagement helps nurture leads down the path to becoming customers.

  • Bookmarklet – Allow me to declare my love for bookmarklets. If an application I use regularly has a bookmarklet, be it Evernote, Google Reader or Hootsuite, I’ll add it to my Chrome Extensions. Bookmarklets are handy little tools for quickly sharing content from around the web on the fly. If you stumble across a piece of content you want to share with your social media followers, rather than opening up another application and copying over the link, you can simply use the bookmarklet to share that content right then and there. Speedy and efficient.

  • Follow Me module – If you want to add social media buttons to webpages so others can connect with you, you’ve typically had to go to a designer to get the icons the right size and format, then to a developer to add those icons to the chosen webpages. The Follow Me module makes this process quick and easy without having to bug half of your team for something so simple. HubSpot lets you easily add your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+ and Pinterest accounts to any of your webpages, whether hosted on the HubSpot CMS or not.

  • Track Keywords/Phrases in Social Media Conversations – This is where rubber hits the road in social media marketing. Tell HubSpot what keyword phrases you want to monitor across Twitter, LinkedIn, the blogosphere, YouTube and Yahoo Answers and those conversations will be pulled into HubSpot to review and respond. Participating in these conversations is a big part of what successful social media marketing is about. You can also provide negative keywords to eliminate noise or unrelated conversations from this feed. For example, if you represent Delta Airlines, you might add the word “faucet” to your negative keyword list to prevent content about the other company named Delta from entering your feed.

SEO, Meet Marketing

Google is getting smarter. I caught an interview over the weekend with Ray Kurzweil, author, inventor and futurist who has been known to make accurate predictions about technology and where it’s headed. In this interview, he talked about concepts within his book, “How to Create a Mind” (which I’m putting on my wish list for the holidays, BTW).

Right now, we are leaving the days behind where SEO means update a Meta tag here, get a link there – all for the sake of creating a “relevant” website Google can understand.

Today, we are already moving from those more granular tactics in SEO to a more holistic approach to marketing online. This is the natural progression of marketing in the digital age. And part of that is because Google is getting smarter, and as it evolves, our approach can evolve to meet it.

SEO Is Marketing … or at Least It Should Be Thought of That Way

In its most simple form, your website is the representation of your brand. Everything you do, including traditional SEO functions like optimizing pages, needs to take into account the brand, marketing and sales goals that are important to your business.

In fact, marketing and branding wisdom should be brought to every decision the SEO team makes. Ask, does the decision support the marketing and business goals — yes or no? Does it demonstrate the values of the brand — yes or no? And marketing and branding knowledge can be applied to make wiser decisions about the analytics data you have as well.

When Will SEO and Marketing Be One?

The shift from search engine optimization in the strictest sense of the word to a more developed “digital marketing” has been occurring for some time. As Google gets smarter, as we have access to more technology, channels and data that allow us to market differently, SEO and marketing become one.

Neither traditional marketing nor SEO can continue to exist within their individual bubbles. Whether traditional marketers like it or not, and whether SEOs like it or not, the two must merge:
  • Traditional marketing cannot exist without knowing how to market online; so traditional marketers must bring all their knowledge about how to market a company and a brand to the digital marketing team.
  • SEO cannot exist without knowing how to support a company’s marketing and branding objectives; so traditional SEOs must ask the right questions and listen intently to the things that are important to the business.

So, Who Is in Charge of the Business Online?

So where does that leave businesses that needs marketing — who do you hire? If you’re able to afford a team, you need a team of people working together to ensure your site is fulfilling both the technical and marketing requirements to compete in the digital space.

And while you may not ever be a Kurzweil, understanding where your discipline is headed in the digital marketing age as technology changes will help you make predictions about the future of online marketing, add to your skill set and contribute at a much higher level to the success of a site.

Google Webmaster Tools Security Bug Re-Opens Access To Old Accounts [Now Fixed]

A security bug in Google Webmaster Tools has given users access to old accounts and websites that they’re no longer supposed to be able to access.

The problem was discovered Tuesday and reported on several SEO blogs and news outlets — including (first, I believe) by Dave Naylor — and was discussed pretty heavily by search marketers on Twitter. We asked Google late Tuesday afternoon to comment on the bug reports, but have not received a reply.

What’s happening in some, not all, Webmaster Tools accounts is that users are finding themselves with sudden access to accounts that they once had access to, but no longer do; i.e., former clients, employers and the like. That bug is presumably giving a lot of power to individuals that shouldn’t have it — power to deindex, disavow links, unverify the current/legitimate webmaster’s access, and even redirect sites to other verified domains in the user’s account. It also reveals a lot of link, search, index/crawl and other data to users that shouldn’t be able to see those things.

The bug isn’t affecting my Webmaster Tools account, so here’s a screenshot from Dave Naylor’s account showing several verification changes that re-opened access to old accounts/websites.

google-wmt-bug

There are reports that the same (or a similar) bug is affecting Google Analytics, and State of Search reported that some blocked connections in Google Talk have also been unblocked.

This is a serious problem and Google’s silence on it so far suggests that they’re still trying to sort out what’s happening and why — and how to fix it.

Postscript: Google has fixed the issue this morning, several hours after the breach. Here is the statement they sent us:
For several hours yesterday a small set of Webmaster Tools accounts were incorrectly re-verified for people who previously had access. We’ve reverted these accounts and are investigating ways to prevent this issue from recurring.

Bing Releases Webmaster Guidelines

Google always transparent with its guidelines on ranking top on SE’s. The only search engine which keep its guidelines on a big secret is BING, at last, now bing releases webmaster guidelines. A late approach but probably a good time to do this, the reason I said it as a good time, because due to a lot of rank drops after panda and penguin updates, few webmasters now looking for an alternative traffic source and probably would like to adopt these new guidelines to rank on BING.
Even though the guidelines given are not so clear as Google’s and some of them have objectionable arguments. For example, in one of the link building guidelines, bing stated that “Internal & external link management – execute by building internal links between related content; consider social media to help build external links, or simply ask websites for them; paying for links is risky“. But didn’t clear that purchasing links is a bad practice and could result in a penalization, like this there are so many points which raises questions.
However, as it was just a beginning, we can hope that they will keep them updated and we can hopefully work a bit to make them bing friendly too. I believe that just depending on one search engine too much is not a good approach, who knows when they will change the entire game. So be ready for anything..

Also bing said that, “changes should be infrequent”. That means we can get some more clear info sooner or later, check this statement…
Changes should be infrequent as these current Webmaster Guidelines cover most major topics. They are not exhaustive and you should not expect to find deep, technical answers in them. They are intended to help most business owners understand the broad strokes of search marketing.
Bing might also comes up with some new webinars on the SEO, and understanding the basics of it (like nobody knows it yet). Also don’t know what else new it could show, lets wait for some more days and see..
Guys, what do you think, bing trying to be transparent is to beat Google?, what might be the strategy behind this all?. Do drop your comments, suggestions and questions in the comments section below. If you have any questions for us, please ask us at our SEO forum.

welcome to my page

When I am glad, you are in my smile,
When I am sad, you are in my tears,
when I am walking, you are in my step,
When I am sleeping, you are in my dreams,
I think these are special feelings,  If I were an artist,
I would paint my feelings, If I were a poetess,
I would quote my feelings, But I am an ordinary girl,
So I just say,
                             I Love You.
